Monstrous Shower Fun!

We are throwing a surprise baby shower for my friend and her son this Sunday. So I won't be able to post this until after the shower because I know she reads this blog once in a while and I don't want to ruin the surprise for her. (Post written 8/23/12)

On one of her Pinterest boards she has all of these cute monster ideas for her nursery. So I thought it would be really fun to go with that theme.

So first up I made her a Smash Book / Junk Journal.  I have been wanting to make one of these for a while and I had just received a Bind-It-All for my birthday. So I decided to go for it. Plus I thought it would be a great idea for my friend to have a Smash Book for when the baby comes or even to help document the end of her pregnancy. She is an avid scrapbooker and has big plans for her baby book. So I thought this would be great for her to "Smash" things on the fly so that she would later have the info for her baby book.

I scoured many sites and Pinterest Pins for ideas. Check out my board to see my inspirations.

Here is my 2 part video about my very first Smash Book / Junk Journal:
Note: I apologize in advance for how many times I say cute, haha.

Part 2:

After I finished the Smash Book I decided to make a diaper cake. I love making them and I know you can never have enough diapers. My daughter is almost eight months old and is wearing size 3 Pampers Cruisers. I really like how they have the polka dots so I thought they would be fun to use for the diaper cake. Generally you get smaller sized diapers for your shower so it would be nice to have some bigger diapers.  Also she can enjoy the diaper cake for a little longer.

Here is my Monster Cake:

I used my Mini Monster Cricut Cartridge.
I found the adorable stuffed monster at
Jo-Ann Fabric.
I had some fun colored wiggle eyes that
were perfect for my monsters.
I added some teethers to the back.
Then I made a fun matching card:
Front of the envelope
Back of the envelope. I used painters tape to seal the envelope
so that it could easily be opened and closed. I used
my zig zag scissors to make it look nicer.
And this is what you see when you open it:)
And here he is:)
I loved making this card because it just came together without much planning. I just went with the flow and it came out really unique. I hope she likes it:)

Once I was done with everything I added these tags to bring it all together:

I really enjoyed doing all this. It was fun to see everything come together.

Can't wait to post this and see what you guys think!

  1. Nichole I love everything you made for my shower!!! You sure were busy! I can't wait to use my custom smashbook - it was fun watching the videos of you going through it and explaining what you did. The diaper cake is also awesome and looks so cute in the baby room, we're definitely displaying it til those diapers fit!!! Looking forward to our crafting marathon this weekend! xxoo Carrie

  2. I'm so glad. It was so much fun. I loved the monster theme. I'll have to show you my Smash book. I had to of course make myself one:) I am super excited about this weekend! Jeremy was trying to tell me Hannah could help, haha. I laughed and said that this visit is for us crafters not them woodworkers, hehe
